Departure from Cefalù to the highest active volcano in Europe: Etna, also called “Mongibello” from the Arab term “Gebel”, meaning mountain. During the ascent you will admire different kind of vegetation and a beautiful landscape, one of the most suggestive in the world. The whole of Etna is a remarkable splendid garden: citrus orchards, olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees and aromatic plants grow all over the slopes. Towards the summit it is almost desert-like, where the lava is sometimes overgrown by moss and lichens. The bus will stop at 2000 mt. You will visit the extinct Silvestri Craters or there is the possibility to go up to 3000 mt. by cable car and private jeep with alpine guide. Free time for lunch in Etna. Continuation to Taormina, well known as the “Pearl of Sicily”. You will have the possibility to visit the Greek Roman theatre or free time to discover Taormina with its beautiful small and charming spots and have a coffee in Piazza IX Aprile. The amazing Greek Theater has a diameter of 109 meters, it is the second largest classical theatre in Sicily, only surpassed by the theatre in Syracuse. The beauty of the place is set off by its great panoramic frame. It is certainly unique for the view on Mount Etna. Free time to visit the old city centre, the cathedral and the famous Corso Umberto for doing shopping. Return to Cefalù via Messina. Stop for a panoramic picture in the strait of Messina to admire Calabria coast.
Remarks: In Mount Etna, please bring warm clothes and walking shoes. It’s possible to rent trekking shoes and k-way at 2500 mt.
