Departure from Cefalù to Monreale, nearby Palermo, where the Cathedral takes you into the realm of the most refined Arab-Norman civilization. The interior walls are entirely decorated by a series of mosaics from Byzantine tradition. Special attraction is the majestic gold figure of Christ Pantocrator in the great apsidal cupola. Possibility to visit the cloister that was once part of the ancient abbey of the Benedictines. Free time to have a coffee and possibility to see a beautiful view over the valley of Conca d'Oro. Continuation to Palermo, provincial and regional capital of Sicily, situated in a wide Tyrrhenian bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino. We walk through the old city and we will discover the amazing Palermo’s monuments rich of Byzantine, Arab-Norman and Baroque architecture. Visit of the Martorana church, one of Palermo's most famous Norman churches with very refined Byzantine mosaics inside. Then, we will admire and visit the spectacular Cathedral, built in the XII century. Inside, it is important to visit the sarcophagi of Frederick II, Roger II, Henry VI and Constance de Hauteville, but also the Treasure containing some extremely interesting items. Free time for shopping or for an ice-cream, or for tasting typical Palermo’s street food. External visit of the Theater Massimo, Palermo's Opera-House. We will walk through one of Palermo's famous markets (Capo). Free time at disposal for lunch. In the afternoon, after a short panoramic tour in the new part of the city, we will visit the Capuchin Catacombs renowned for the thousands of mummies inside. Return to Cefalù.
